Day 2

The second day we hired a van and driver to take us up into the mountains. It was supposed to be about a 2.5 hour drive from town to where we wanted to go. The nice thing was that we could set our own agenda and stay where ever we wanted for as long as we wanted! Our driver, Rudy, picked us up at 9am and we headed towards the mountains. The scenery was beautiful. We drove along the coast for awhile, and could see the small nearby islands. After about an hour and a half or so, Rudy asked us if anyone needed to stop at the toilet, which we decided was a good idea. The stop ended up being a small market where you could buy handicrafts and other things from Sabah (the state we were in.) It was a much better market than the one we went to the night before in town! It also had an amazing view! (Erin, Kristin, Crissy, me, and Kendra at the look-out point..)
After our break, we got back in the van and continued through the mountains. The second half of the trip was a little bumpier, and by the end, I was starting to feel a little car sick. I was glad that we arrived shortly after that! Our first stop was the hot springs and canopy walk.
This national forest was in the rain forest. It was very hot and humid, but also very beautiful.
There were giant leaves, which we decided explained how Adam and Eve could have made their clothes from leaves, one leaf was almost big enough to cover you! We ate lunch in a rainforest cafe and then headed up the side of the mountain to the canopy walk. It was a fairly straight up climb, and we were tired by the time we reached the top! But it was worth it. The view was amazing!
Kendra, me, Kristin, and Crissy on one of the observation towers between the rope bridges.
The canopy walk is a set of 4 rope bridges suspended between trees at the top of the rain forest. It wasn't' so bad if you didn't look down! Only 6 people are allowed on each bridge at a time. My biggest fear was that someone not from our group was going to start crossing while there were already six of us on.
After the canopy walk we decided to go for a fish massage. Now, they do fish massage in Singapore, where you put your feet into a pool of small sucker fish and they eat the dead skin off of your feet and legs. However, this foot massage was not in a small pool, nor did it have small fish. We walked into the river and had fish food to attract these GIANT sucker fish. (Okay, maybe not giant, but some of them were at least 18 inches long.) Then when you moved your hands, they would start sucking on your feet and legs. At first it was too weird. I got in the water and screamed like a little girl. But, after a few minutes, I really enjoyed it. We only paid to go up to our knees, but by the end, Erin and I were wishing we had paid for the whole body massage!
