Today was the beginning of the second week of school. After an amazing time away at church camp this weekend, I walked into my classroom ready for the challenges that this day might bring. I looked over my lesson plans and almost groaned when I remembered that today we would be talking about Isaiah 7:14, which says "Therefore the Lord will give you a sign, and the virgin will be with child, and bear a son, and call his name Immanuel." Which meant, that today, on only the 5th day of school, I would get to explain to my third graders what a virgin is. We opened our Bibles, and after a brief discussion of how the Bible is made up and why there are different versions, we jumped right in. As we read the verse together there were a lot of confused looks on their little faces. When the verse was finished, I asked the students if they knew what it meant to be with child. Of course, they did not. They thought it might mean that you were with a child. So, after explaining that it meant you were pregnant, we moved on to virgin. I told them that the way God created us, it takes a mom and a dad to make a baby, and a virgin is a mom without a dad. To which one of my students replied "I disagree. Sometimes dad's leave, so it doesn't take a mom and a dad." We had some discussion about how although it is true that some dads leave, there was a dad to start with. One of my other students gave a much more descriptive answer to where babies come from, and we moved on.
Later in the day, my high school TA came in to help out. It was his first day, so I gave him a chance to introduce himself to my students, and for the kids to ask him questions. One of the first questions they asked him was if he had a girlfriend. He does not. They were outraged that he didn't have a girlfriend stating "You're in high school! You're SUPPOSED to have a girlfriend!" He tried to explain to them that you do not have to have a girlfriend to be in high school. Finally they let they topic drop, the bell rang, and he was heading out the door. However, while he was on his way out, one of the students noticed that he was wearing a ring. They asked him about it and he told them it was a purity ring. There response: "What's a purity ring?" He got a troubled look on his face and replied "Um, maybe you should ask your teacher." as he ducked out the door.
This led to our second interesting discussion of the day. This conversation led us to talking about dating, the purpose of dating, and what you should do if you decide you don't want to date someone anymore. It was quite amusing at times, and actually led very well into our next lesson on culture and beliefs.
It does make me curious though what was said around some dinner tables tonight. :)
